Hovander Dog Park

Building a multi-use trail, especially one that requires dogs to be leashed, right through the middle of an off-leash area is an invitation for unwanted situations, yet that is exactly what was done at the boat launch end of Hovander Homestead Park in Ferndale.  And yes this was an off-leash area before the County and City of Ferndale pushed the Nooksack Loop through up to Main St. in 2014.  (the before image is not mine, but I can’t remember the…Continue Reading

Another Nooksack Loop Ride

I’m pretty much wearing a rut into this route around this mostly north of Bellingham loop.  This time riding from my house, rather than downtown Ferndale or somewhere else along the route, today’s ride was a somewhat longer ride at about 50 miles. I did the loop clockwise which for me had more of the gravel on the latter half of the ride which I like because as I get tired the gravel holds my attention better than a long…Continue Reading

Nooksack Loop – Again and Again

I’ve done this loop, my Nooksack Loop, again and again and again, each time refining it just a bit.  And the refinements keep getting smaller and smaller as there really isn’t much in the way of new trails or roads happening along this route.  It looks like the short section of railroad grade between Cornwall and Squalicum Parks is preparing to become a trail, but other than that nada. So Sunday, when I rode this loop last, I looked a…Continue Reading

Bellingham Inner Loop

If I’ve said it once, i’ve said it a thousand times; I love to ride loops.  Yes, I do.  I even think of out and back rides as kind of like linear loops in that once you turn around, even the terrain seems new; uphill is down, an uphill obstacle becomes a drop, it just isn’t the same ride when you’re traveling the other way.  Still, a real loop has the appeal of committing to complete the whole loop rather…Continue Reading

Early Spring Loop – rev A

A couple of weeks ago I kicked off what looked like Spring ‘19 with a 40 mile loop that essentially rounded Bellingham, hitting iconic locations like Whatcom Falls, Galbraith, Padden and Boulevard Park while also extending up to Hovander Park in Ferndale.  Enjoyed the heck out of that ride, but felt like a few revisions could be made to the loop.  I wanted to make the route as much on trails or good bike routes as I could, leaving all…Continue Reading

Haggen to Haggen Loop – cont’d

Last week’s Haggen to Haggen Loop ride was a bit of a bust.  It’s been several months and several hundred miles of riding since I’ve last had a flat, so three in one ride was just time to pack it in and try another day. So today, with a fresh tube and patch kit in my pack, I set out for another attempt and that attempt was a success. This is a nice loop because it’s not just 30 miles…Continue Reading
