2019 Mt. Baker Hill Climb

I considered my ride in the 2018 Mt. Baker Hill Climb an adventure to be endured, not necessarily enjoyed during the adventure, yet another example of a favorite C.S. Lewis quote, Adventures are never fun while you’re having them. Going into the 2019 event with eyes wide open, I’ve been expecting a tough but enjoyable ride, even during the ride.  I’d been reimagining my Kona Dew as a fast road bike with gearing to tackle the hill at my pace, as well…Continue Reading

Reimagining the Dew

Sometimes I reimagine one of the several bikes hanging on my wall and sometimes I actually carry my reimagining on to the reinventing stage.  Such is the case with my Kona Dew.  Now I’ve put a lot of miles on the Dew, but all of those miles were as a hybrid bike, riding gravel, pavement, dirt, rocks, roots, water, whatever.  For the most part, I’ve had cyclocross knobby tires on it for those miles and they seem to do pretty…Continue Reading

Bellingham Inner Loop

If I’ve said it once, i’ve said it a thousand times; I love to ride loops.  Yes, I do.  I even think of out and back rides as kind of like linear loops in that once you turn around, even the terrain seems new; uphill is down, an uphill obstacle becomes a drop, it just isn’t the same ride when you’re traveling the other way.  Still, a real loop has the appeal of committing to complete the whole loop rather…Continue Reading

Birch Bay to Boulder Beach

This route has been an enigma for me in the same way that Canyon Lake had been an enigma for me until I actually rode to Canyon Lake for myself.  My wife and I have walked in and around all the roads near BP out on Pt. Whitehorn, yet not actually traversed the whole area.  I thought it would be a nice pleasant alternative to riding Kickerville between Mtn. View and Birch Bay Lynden Rd. Spoiler….it was in all respects a…Continue Reading

oops

Oops, I did it again.  My wife went out of town and I got another bike.  Thinking about it, perhaps there is a pattern there, maybe?  What I did was purchaseI, for a small sum, a Kona Dew hybrid/urban bike, but what I really did was solve the gear ratio problem I was wrestling with on the Burley.  The Burley is a hybrid of sorts, but the gear ratios are strictly street (Shimano 105, 52-tooth), making it tough to do…Continue Reading
