Ok, so let’s not hang anyone on the cross, so to speak, over this post, because I know it is not a scholarly interpretation of this biblical passage, but I’ve seen worse so I am going to run with it.
Let’s talk Dueteronomy 5:32-33, Old Testament, Moses speaking. He had just finished sharing God’s 10 Commandments with his people when he threw on this quick follow up comment, like replying to his own FB post.
Moses said, “So be careful to do as the LORD your God has commanded you; you are not to turn aside to the right or to the left. You must walk in all the ways that the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days in the land you will possess.”
I know Moses wasn’t talking about today’s political left & right, yet the message is still valid in today’s divisive left vs. right political world. Both the ideals adopted by the right and the ideals espoused by the left leave a lot to be desired when it comes to the betterment of mankind. If you focus on left/right then you are not focused on God nor your fellow man, you are focused on political gamesmanship. It is that simple.
Love thy neighbor as thyself, stay focused on God.
Also, I personally think that even if you yourself may not believe in God, it’s still worth asking yourself if maybe you haven’t personally veered too far to the left or right…maybe it’s worth a little time in the mirror.
